Air Force opens season at Southern Utah

This Week: Air Force travels to St. George, Utah, for the annual Pizza Hut-Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational, Saturday-Monday, Feb. 6-8, hosted by Southern Utah University at the Sunbrook Golf Club (Par-72; 6,900 yards). Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com.
The Format: The teams will play 18 holes each day with a shotgun start every day at approximately 9 a.m. MT during the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Competing Teams: Air Force, Dixie State, North Dakota, Northern Colorado, Oral Roberts, Sacramento State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley and Weber State
Last Season: Utah State won the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational last season with a 36-hole total of 573. The Falcons placed sixth in the 12-team tournament with a two-day, 36-hole score of 592. Josh Wu led the Falcons over the two-day tournament with a 145 (+1) to tie for 11th overall going 73-72 over 36 holes. Luke Trujillo came in at 151 (75-76).
Who's Back: Head coach George Koury returns five of the top eight golfers from last season's team that posted three top eight tournament finishes. Senior team captain Kyle Spencer returns after placing fifth on the team with a 75.13 stroke average last season, including one top 10 finish. Junior Luke Trujillo placed second on the team with a 73.89 stroke average while sophomore Isaac Layne was fourth with a 75.00. Juniors Colter Baca and Jonathan Farmer return as well and bring experience and leadership to the lineup.
The Season: The Falcons will compete in five regular-season tournaments this season. Following the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational, Air Force will compete in the Wyoming Desert Collegiate, Feb. 19-21, the Lamkin Classic, March 8-10, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, April 5-6, the BYU Cougar Classic, April 23-24 and the Mountain West Championships, April 30-May 1.
