Norris captured first-team All-America honors and the third-fastest 5000 in Academy history.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force senior Mahala Norris captured first-team All-America honors this evening (March 12), following an impressive fourth-place performance in the 5000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Just one week after a conference-winning run on the cross country course, Norris stepped onto the track as one of the nation's top 5000-meter runners. Norris, who entered the championship race ranked 14th on the list of qualifiers, stayed tucked within the main group of nine as the field began to spread in the latter stages of the race. Making her move on the final lap, Norris kicked her way from eighth to fourth and crossed the finish line a career-best time of 15:51.73 – the third-fastest time in Air Force history.
Her finish is the best indoor placement in a running event for Air Force since 2010.
Norris will now turn her attention to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday (March 15), while seniors Mitch Lipe and Greg Skage close out the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships tomorrow (March 13) with the pole vault competition at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
