Big Doubleheader Sweep in Tucson
Last weekend, AF played a trio of games in Tucson, Ariz. after the originally scheduled MW series at SJSU was postponed. AF made the most of it, knocking off Wichita State, 12-3, followed by a 5-2 upset win over #13 Arizona, 5-2.
Skenes Named MW Player of the Week
Freshman utility player Paul Skenes was named the Mountain West Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending March 14. Skenes batted .417 on the weekend with five hits, a double, a home run, four RBIs, and four runs scored.
In the upset win over the Wildcats, Skenes closed out a 5-2 win with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two for his second save of the season. He also started the game as the DH and went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs
In a the 12-3 win over Wichita State, the Lake Forest, Calif. native went 2-for-4 starting at catcher, including a three-run home run, the first homer of his career.
Knocking off the Big Boys
With the upset win over #13 Arizona, combined with the victory over #7 LSU earlier this season, AF has knocked off two top-15 opponents for the first time since 2010. That season, AF defeated then-MW rival TCU twice, while the Horned Frogs were ranked in the top-5.
Stymieing the Wildcat Offense
Against the Wildcats, who entered the weekend as the number one scoring offense and number two in total hits in the country, the Falcons held them to just the two runs and four hits overall in the 5-2 upset win, both season-lows for UA.
Five Game Winning Streak
AF won five straight games after the sweep of Army, and the DH sweep of Wichita State and #13 Arizona. The five-game winning streak was the longest for the Falcons since winning eighth-straight in 2017.
Air Force pitchers allowed four or fewer runs in each of the five-straight wins, while the offense recorded double-digit hits in four of the five.
Benchmark Wins in the DH Sweep
For the Falcons as a program, it was the first win over the Shockers in 12 games between the two schools all-time, while against the Wildcats it was just the second win in 15 all-time meetings.
The Do It All Kid
Freshman Paul Skenes has been extremely versatile for the Falcons this season, as he has made starts at catcher (5), first base (2), and DH (5). He has also made his four pitching appearances in games in which he started in the batting lineup, notching two saves, which leads the MW.
Going Streaking
AF has a pair of streaks going into the weekend. Junior Braydon Altorfer has a reached base in all 12 games, and has a reached base streak of 16 dating back to last season. Senior Cole Blatchford owns a seven-game hitting streak as well.
On the Horizon
The Falcons will welcome in UNLV for the first MW home series of the season. The Falcons and Rebels will square off at Falcon Field March 27-28.
