The WAC Swimmer of the Year will swim in the 100 back and 100 freestyle
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Air Force Academy men's swimming junior Isaac Gwin is set to compete at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, set to take place Wednesday-Saturday, March 24-27, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year will swim in the 100 back on Friday and the 100 freestyle on Saturday.
Action in Greensboro can be watched live on WatchESPN and the ESPN App, while live results can be found at the link above. Prelim heats are set to start at 8 a.m. MT, while finals will be contested at 4 p.m. MT on both days. The 100 back will be the final individual swimming event contested on Friday, while the 100 free will be second event swam on Saturday.
Gwin becomes the third AF swimmer in the last two seasons to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships, after 2020 grad Zach Nelson and sophomore Wen Zhang earned spots last season. Both earned honorable mention All-American status after the 2020 NCAA Championships were canceled. The last AF swimmer to actually compete at the national invite was Michael Barnosky back in 2016, where he earned All-American status in the 100 breast after finishing third overall.
Gwin earned his invite on the strength of his 100 back time, which is 31st in the nation (46.36). He also earned NCAA B cut times in the 100 free (43.40) and 200 IM (1:45.98) to earn the right to swim those at nationals as well. He has declined to swim in the 200 IM, which will be contested on Thursday.
The Leander, Texas native had an outstanding WAC Swimming & Diving Championships, as he won three individual events, was a part of a winning relay, and set two school records. In the 200 IM, Gwin won the crown with a 1:45.98, which broke the previous 200 IM time set in 2016. He then went on to win titles in the 100 back and 100 free to become just the third AF men's swimmer all-time to win three individual titles in a single conference championship. He finished off the weekend by swimming a leg in the winning 400 free relay, which set a school record time of 2:53.25.
