Air Force Tripped Up at UTRGV

EDINBURG - Air Force dropped a 3-1 match to UT-Rio Grande Valley in Western Athletic Conference action, Friday afternoon at the UTRGV Soccer Complex. The Falcons drop to 1-4-1 in the league following their fourth-straight loss, while UTRGV remains unbeaten at 4-0-2.
Freshman forward Thaddaeus Dewing was Air Force's lone goal-scorer, connecting with Lathan Spadafora and Nick Bourgeois for a goal in the 87th minute. The goal marked his second of the season while Bourgeois and Spadafora were credited with their first assists of the season.
The Vaquero's William Akio notched a match-high two goals including one from a penalty kick in the 81st minute. UTRGV's Reshaun Walkes was the first to light the scoreboard via an assist from Elyad Shojaei in the 39th minute.
Air Force out-shot UTRGV, 14-10, but took half as many shots on goal, 6-3. The Falcons were the aggressors in the first half taking five shots to the Vaquero's two. Michael Neacsu, Giuliano Daniel and Dewing took two shot attempts each to lead Air Force in shooting on the match.
Jared Dove and Kainoa Likewise registered 90 minutes of action for the Air Force defense. Likewise made three saves on the day.
"To get the result we want, we have to start putting away our early chances," head coach Doug Hill said. "Today, as well as the past two games, we have had good opportunities but just haven't been very clinical finishing those chances."
"Everybody on the team has to have a peak performance, and furthermore, we have to put those performances together on match day to make it count," continued Hill. "If we get 11 guys working together on both sides of the ball, we will see the results in our play. UTRGV had some special players and they were able to put the ball away when they had the opportunity and that was the difference today. We need to turn it around quickly and get a result on the road against incarnate Word on Wednesday."
Air Force travels to San Antonio, Texas, to take on Incarnate Word, Wednesday (March 31), at noon CT. The Falcons and Cardinals will be meeting for the seventh time in program history with Air Force remaining unbeaten in the six-game series. Last season, Air Force outscored UIW, 3-1, in San Antonio.
