
Air Force travels to Ping BYU Cougar Classic

This Week: Air Force travels to the Ping BYU Cougar Classic, Friday-Saturday, April 23-24, at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.  Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
The Lineup: Senior Kyle Spencer will play in the No. 1 spot at the Cougar Classic, followed by sophomore Isaac Layne, junior Luke Trujillo, junior Colter Baca and junior Jonathan Farmer.
 
The Format: The teams will play 36 holes on Friday, April 23, with the final 18 holes played on Saturday, April 24. Tee times will begin at 8 am MT. The par-72 course plays at 7,142 yards.
 
Competing Teams: Air Force will be joined in the 19-team tournament by the host school, BYU, Boise State (No. 60), Colorado State, Denver, Dixie State, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Nevada (No. 65), New Mexico (No. 29), New Mexico State, San Francisco, San Diego (No. 59), St. Mary's (No. 65), Santa Clara, UNLV, Utah (No. 50), Utah Valley and Wyoming.
 
Last Time at the Cougar Classic: The 2020 Ping Cougar Classic was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. In 2019, Air Force tied for ninth at the Cougar Classic. On the final day, the Falcons shot a two-under-par 286 to jump up to ninth place. The two-under score tied as the best team score of the season. BYU won the 15-team event at 840 (-24). Boise State was second and Colorado State was third. Air Force freshman Jonathan Farmer and junior Josh Wu each shot a two-under-par 70 in the final round. The round was Famer's best of his collegiate career at the time. Farmer is the only current Falcon that has played in the Cougar Classic, shooting 219 (+3).
Recently: Sophomore Isaac Layne led the Air Force golf team at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, Tuesday, April 6, at the Whirlwind Golf Club, in Chandler, Ariz. After an opening round 76, Layne came back with a one-under 71 in the second round and a 73 in the final round for a 54-hole score of 220. He was the top Falcon, placing 61st overall. Senior Kyle Spencer shot a one-under 71 on the final day and came in at 225 for the tournament. After a double-bogey on his second hole in the final round, he posted five birdies and played the final 16 holes in three-under. Junior Luke Trujillo shot 232 for the tournament while freshman Aaron Kuznik came in at 240 and junior Colter Baca shot 243. Three Falcons competed as individuals with Jonathan Farmer shooting 227, Patrick Erwin at 245 and Max Heupel at 251. Air Force placed 23rd with a 54-hole total of 917. The Falcons' best round of the tournament came on the final day with a 297. San Diego State, ranked 28th in the nation, won the tournament with an 831. TCU was second (837), Colorado was third (840), Loyola Marymount was fourth (844) and Stanford was fifth (845).
Season Stats: Junior Luke Trujillo leads the team with a 76.17 season stroke average. He has played all 12 rounds this season and shot a 65 (-7) at the Pat Hicks Invitational, Feb. 17. Isaac Layne and Kyle Spencer are tied for second on the team at 76.33. As a team, the Falcons' season-best round of 291 came in the second round at the Pat Hicks Invite, Feb. 17.

This week's Cougar Classic is the fifth tournament for the Falcons this season and the final of the regular season. The season concludes with the Mountain West Championships, April 30-May 1, in Tucson, Ariz.
