Women’s Tennis Downed By Fresno State

Air Force women's tennis (11-7, 3-5 MW) fell to Fresno State (14-5, 7-2 MW) 4-1 Friday afternoon in a neutral-site Mountain West dual at the MacArthur Tennis Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno, Nevada.

Leading the way for the Falcons was freshman Hailey Stelse with the win at No. 6 singles. Stelse defeated Jane Ellis 6-4, 6-2.

The Falcons were unable to get the doubles point, as the group went 1-2. Meredith Jones and Hailey Stelse won at No. 2 doubles over Carlotta Nonnis Marzano and Carolina Piferi 6-1.

Isabella Flodin and Alex Kuo fell at No. 1 to Dalia Ahmed and Deniza Marcinkevica 7-5. Shailla Alda and Sydney Fitch fell at No. 3 to A.C. Hummel and Ella Husrefovic 6-3.

The Falcons also dropped matches at No. 2, 4 and 5 singles. Fitch suffered her first singles setback of the season, falling at No. 2 to Marcinkevica 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. Alda fell at No. 4 to Piferi 6-0, 6-2. Mebeli Becerra fell at No. 5 to Ella Husrefovic 6-1, 6-0.

Head coach Kim Gidley on the match:
"It was a match that the team played well enough to win, but came up short. Great energy was set with MJ and Hailey winning at No. 2 dubs, 6-1. With small leads at No. 1 & 3, the team just fell short of converting the doubles point. In the singles, I was pleased with the fight that everyone responded with. With first sets at No. 1,3, and 6 - and Sydney in a tie-breaker marathon at No. 2, the team still had a chance. It was great that Hailey got the straight set win at No. 6. Unfortunately, Sydney lost her first singles match of the year and this gave Fresno State the win. We will definitely be back and ready to go tomorrow."

Air Force plays its season-finale tomorrow, Saturday, April 24, at Nevada.
