Women’s Tennis Caps Season With 4-1 Win At Nevada
4/24/2021 6:12:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Air Force women's tennis (12-7, 4-5 MW) defeated Nevada (5-11, 0-10 MW) 4-1 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West dual and season-finale at the MacArthur Tennis Center in Reno, Nevada. The Falcons tied a program record with four wins in MW play and finished with its 12th consecutive winning season.
The Falcons picked up the doubles point and went 3-1 in singles for the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Air Force opened with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles for the point. Shailla Alda and Sydney Fitch won at No. 3 over Christina Moll Alles and Selina Turulja 7-5. Alex Kuo and Isabella Flodin won at No. 1 over Anastasia Luneva and Carla Del Barrio 7-6 (8-6).
In singles, Fitch opened with a win at No. 2 over Luneva 6-3, 6-1. Fitch capped a standout sophomore campaign with a 12-1 singles record.
The Falcons took its lone setback at No. 4 as Alda fell to Moll Alles 6-4, 6-2.
Meredith Jones won at No. 1 over Milka Genkova 6-3, 6-2 in her final match at Air Force. Hailey Stelsey capped the match with a win at No. 6 over Mathilde Sarcelet 6-2, 6-2.
Head coach Kim Gidley on the win:
"I can't say enough good things about this team. With only one player (Meredith Jones) having ever played a Mountain West Conference match before the season, they stepped it up. They are certainly a team of overachievers and have really bonded as a team. The grit of this team was shown in the doubles. All three matches went to a tiebreaker and match points were saved with Izzy and Al at No. 1 and Shailla and Sydney at No. 3 before both matches won in the tie-breaker, while No. 2 was still in the tie-break. Talk about close and exciting. Then in the singles, the team turned up the heat, winning the first set in four of the six. In the end, it was great to see MJ finish her last match with a straight set win and also to have Sydney Fitch rebound after yesterday's singles loss. It was the first and only singles match that Sydney lost, so I would expect great things from her in the future. To finish the season in itself was an accomplishment, but to win the last match with such a young group is exciting for the future of this team."
