LAS VEGAS – Air Force Women's Tennis' bid for a conference title came to a close on Thursday evening, as the Falcons fell 4-0 to five-seed Grand Canyon in the quarterfinal round of the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship in Las Vegas.
For the first time since their SEC doubleheader at No. 7 Oklahoma (Feb. 22), Air Force dropped a second-consecutive doubles point. Senior Abby Cotuna and sophomore Sofia Mavor both were knotted at 4-all against Isabella Crossman/Dania Deaifi, before falling in the final two games to lose 6-4. On line two, All-Mountain West doubles pairing Arianna Van Houweling and Shivaani Selvan rallied from trailing 4-1 to tie at 4-all, before dropping a 6-4 set to Karina Hofbauer/Gala Arangio to clinch the GCU doubles point. On line three, Maya Michalski and Jariahlyn Rhoades led the majority of their set against Grand Canyon's Hams Metwali/Amalia Suciu and threatened a victory at 5-4 when GCU clinched.
In singles, the Falcons fell on lines three (Arangio def. Mavor, 6-2, 6-2), two (Hofbauer def. Van Houweling, 7-6(5), 6-3) and four (Metwali def. Yule Kang, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1) in order to seal the shutout.
Cotuna, Nadia Kojonroj and Michalski were each into a third set when the match was called. Cotuna, facing Crossman on the top flight, dropped a narrow 7-5 first set then breezed through a 6-1 second. The senior trailed 5-1 but avoided a loss with the GCU clinch. Kojonroj rallied from a first-set deficit to win, 7-5, against Deaifi on line five. After dropping a 6-4 second set, she trailed 1-0 to open the third when the Falcons' match ended. Michalski, coming off of her first dual win last week at home against New Mexico, split sets against GCU's Amalie Suciu and was tied at 4-all in the third at the clinch.
Air Force closes the 2025-26 dual season with an 11-13 record and an 8-3 mark in Mountain West play, marking a single-season program record in conference wins.
