Air Force Opens Action at NCAA West Prelim

Sam Gilman advanced to the next round of the 1500-meter after qualifying on time.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Air Force sophomore Sam Gilman advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 1500-meter run this evening (May 26), as he qualified on time during the first round of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary in College Station, Texas. Gilman was one of four first-time national qualifiers to represent the Academy at the opening round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The sophomore clocked a time of 3:45.56 to place sixth in his first-round heat – finishing just 0.04 shy from the top-five that automatically advanced out of his heat. Waiting out two more rounds of first round races, Gilman finished as the day's fastest time qualifier – and 18th overall – to move on to Friday's round. Freshman Cole Lindhorst also competed in the opening round of the 1500-meter run, finishing 45th with a time of 3:55.73.
From the field, junior Ethan Gardner matched his career high of 16'10¾" to finish 38th in the pole vault, while classmate Ryan Brown added a clearance of 15'11" to finish 43rd. Fellow junior Nick Oesterling also competed today, registering a throw of 178'10" to finish 44th in the javelin.
Air Force returns to E.B. Cushing Stadium tomorrow (May 27) for a pair of events during the first day of women's competition at the NCAA West Preliminary.
