FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Though the Falcons may still be a couple of weeks away from the official start of the 2021-22 swimming and diving season, the women appear to be in midseason form.
On Sunday morning, head swimming coach Colleen Murphy and a handful of her swimmers team traveled to Horsetooth Reservoir in rival territory to compete at the 2021 Horsetooth Open Water Swim, where Air Force placed first amongst five other collegiate programs.
"While we only took a small group to Horsetooth this year, the swimmers really stepped up and competed well," said Murphy. "They got a chance to do something a little different and race early in the year, I am very proud of the way they stepped up and performed."
In a field of 40 swimmers, freshman Katherine Kucik finished third overall with a time of 51:40 in the 2.4 mile race. Three other Air Force swimmers were among the first 10 to cross the finish line, including Lauren Arnold (51:47), Corrine Yorkman (52:39), and Gina Jenkins (52:40). The Falcons' combined time of 4:23:01 was more than two minutes faster than the next-best group, Colorado State (4:25:38).
Next for the Air Force swimmers is the annual Blue/Silver Intersquad meet on September 25, followed by the start of the regular season, when the Falcons travel to Grand Junction on October 1 to compete at the Intermountain Shootout.
