An impressive list of nationally-recognized competitions are on the Falcons' calendar this year.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Backed by six home meets and road trips to several of the nation's premier competitions, the Air Force track and field team released its schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 season this afternoon. The Falcons will host five indoor meets at the Cadet Field House and one outdoor competition at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
Air Force will open the season in early December, when it hosts its yearly Holiday Open on Dec. 3. The Falcons continue their indoor home schedule during the 2022 calendar year, with the Air Force Combined Events Meet (Jan. 20-21), the Air Force Invitational (Jan. 21-22), the Invitational at the Peak (Feb. 4), and the Air Force Collegiate Open (Feb. 18). During the outdoor season, the Falcons will host their annual Twilight Open to conclude the regular season and celebrate the senior class on May 6.
The Falcons will also send squads to Boulder, Colo. (Potts Invitational, Jan. 14-15) and Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech Open, Jan. 28-29) during the first full month of the season, while the team splits for the Don Kirby Invitational (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Iowa State Classic (Ames, Iowa) over the Feb. 11-12 weekend.
The Mountain West Indoor Championships – back after a one-year absence – will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 24-26, while the NCAA Indoor Championships, held in Birmingham, Ala., this year, will wrap up the first half of the season on March 10-12.
Once again, the Falcons' outdoor schedule will feature trips to numerous nationally-recognized competitions, including San Diego State's Aztec Invitational (March 24-26), the Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1), the West Coast Relays (April 1-2), the Jim Click Shootout (April 7-9) and the Drake Relays (April 28-30). Air Force will also compete at the Mt. SAC Relays, which return to the newly-renovated Hilmer Lodge Stadium on April 14-16, during a busy weekend in California that includes top-tier competition at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 14) and Beach Invitational (April 15-16).
Closer to home, Air Force will also face off against its local foes during competitions at Colorado (Jerry Quiller Classic on March 18-19) and Colorado State (Jack Christiansen Invitational on April 23).
The Mountain West Outdoor Championships will kick off the outdoor postseason on May 11-14, as the conference field heads to Clovis, Calif., for the fourth-time in as many championship meets. The NCAA Outdoor Championships begin for the Falcons with the West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 25-28, and conclude with the championship rounds in Eugene, Ore., on June 8-11.
"We're relieved that the Mountain West Championship meets will return to a three-day indoor format and four-day outdoor format," head coach Ralph Lindeman said, as he highlighted some of the meets on his team's upcoming schedule. "We're excited to be returning to the Mt. SAC Relays after a two-year covid-related hiatus and seeing the recently-completed renovation of Hilmer Lodge Stadium. This will give us three major relay meets – Fresno State's West Coast Relays, the Mt SAC Relays, and the Drake Relays, which has become a fixture on our schedule. One of the biggest features on our outdoor schedule is that we are returning to the University of Arizona's Jim Click Shootout for the first time in eight years – a scoring meet which will receive high emphasis from our coaching staff and team."
Current Defense Department and Air Force Academy rules require all individuals to wear a mask inside Academy facilities. All individuals who have not been fully vaccinated must also wear masks outside on military installations.
