Falcons drop physical match with Jackrabbits
9/20/2021 8:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
USAFA, Colo. - A rainy, autumn evening washed over two attacking sides, as Air Force and South Dakota State engaged in a game of tug-and-war for 90 minutes. A second-half score for the visiting Jackrabbits proved to be the difference on the night however, as the Falcons were defeated 1-0 in the first-ever matchup between the two institutions.
The two teams were mightily even in the first-half, with both sides managing six shots in the first 45-minutes. Though, the Air Force offense tapered off in the second-half, finding space for only one shot in the concluding 45 minutes, whereas South Dakota State maintained its offensive pressure with seven shots. Only three of the Falcons seven shots forced action from the goalkeeper.
Larry Friend's squad maintained an abundance of energy and competitiveness, though in the 69th minute, SDSU's Eden Brooker capitalized in front of the net after a nifty pass from Cecila Limongi. In a match where counter-attacking chances were aplenty, Air Force was simply unable to create a proper chance in the final-third.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Falcons, after defeating both Navy and Army in succession. Next, Air Force (3-3-1, 0-0) opens Mountain West Conference play with San Jose State, as the Spartans travel to Colorado Springs on Friday, September 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm MT.
