Air Force opens the 2022 season at #11 Utah State, as head coach Jennifer Green enters her second season in charge of the Falcons. Air Force returns plenty of savvy veterans to the team's 2022 roster, including 2021 USAG All-Americans Daija Stevenson, Pixie Brock, Grace Bardes, Val Smith, Briona Carswell, and Natalie Meyer.
Meet History with Utah State
-Historically, Air Force is 1-13 versus Utah State
-The most previous meeting between the two programs took place on January 25, 2019, with Air Force falling 195.550-192.375 on Jan. 25, 2019 at USAFA.
-The Falcons return to Logan for the first time since 2015, an eventual 193.975-186.675 Aggie triumph.
-Air Force's lone victory over Utah State was in 2002, with Air Force besting Utah State 193.775-193.400 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
Recapping 2021
Air Force women's gymnastics concluded the 2021 season with a 4-18 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the MPSF, splitting the first-place position with San Jose State, the only other MPSF team to compete amidst the pandemic. The Falcons posted a season-high team score of 194.400 at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships.
Junior Daija Stevenson was tabbed the team's MVP. Stevenson competed in every event for every meet of the season with the exception of the season opener. She posted three career-best scores on the season and won first-place on seven occasions. Her 9.900 on the floor exercise is a career-high mark and ties for the highest score by any Falcon on the season. She earned USAG All-America honors in the all-around, floor exercise and vault, marking her sixth career USAG All-America accolade.
2021 USAG Championship Recap
Air Force posted a season-high 194.400 to finish third at the 2021 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships team finals. Host team Southeast Missouri took first (195.025), previous champions Lindenwood took second (194.875) while Texas Woman's University and Centenary finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Four Falcons posted career-best scores across three events. Air Force opened the championships on the vault where the posted a season-high team score in the event. They were most troubled on their second event, the uneven bars, but still managed to rebound and post strong scores on the balance beam and floor exercise. Cam Barber and Pixie Brock led the Falcons with 9.850 on the beam and floor, respectively. Daija Stevenson had the highest finish, landing second place in the all-around.
Eight Falcons Earn All-American Honors a Season Ago
The women's gymnastics team concluded the 2021 campaign with eight All-Americans earning 11 accolades at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, Sunday afternoon. Cam Barber, Daija Stevenson, Pixie Brock, Tyler Davis and Grace Bardes were all selected to compete in the individual finals.
Stevenson, who earned first-team honors in the all-around, vault and floor exercise, notching her sixth career All-American accolade, competed on the vault and floor, placing eighth and ninth, respectively. Barber, who picked up first-team All-America status on the bars and beam, competed in both events in the finals. She finished seventh and sixth respectively. Davis, who boasts an impressive seven career USAG All-America accolades, added one more to the tally with AA status on the vault. She finished second in the finals with a 9.812.
Bardes in her first appearance in the finals, earned first-team All-America honors on the bars, where she went on to finish sixth in the field. Brock, who earned her first career USAG All-America nod on the floor, competed in the finals to finish tied for sixth in the event with a 9.800. Teammates Val Smith and Briona Carswell earned second-team honors on the beam while Natalie Meyer took second-team honors on the floor exercise. The honors marked a first for Smith, and a second for Carswell and Meyer in the same event.
After Utah State
Following Air Force's season debut, the Falcons will travel to Shreveport, LA to compete in dual action against Centenary College on January 23. The event is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm MT.
