Falcons Fall to San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 contest to San Jose State this afternoon (Oct. 15) at Spartan Gym in San Jose.

Senior BrookeLyn Messenger and junior Joi Harvey tied for the team lead with seven kills apiece – with Harvey's total coming on .750 hitting (7-1-8). Messenger was also one of three Falcons to tally a block and one of four to serve up an ace, while sophomore Murphy Riggs nabbed five digs and junior Carolyn Reinkensmeyer collected 13 digs.

Sophomore Mac Russ earned the Falcons' first offensive point, but the Spartans opened the set on a 6-1 run. A successful challenge from head coach Keith Barnett stopped the run, while kills from Harvey (two) and Messenger (one) quickly pulled Air Force within two (6-8). San Jose State responded with four-straight points to take a 12-6 lead. A kill from senior Sarah Markwardt broke up another run that pushed the Falcons' deficit to 8-17. An ace from Riggs stopped the Spartans' run and sparked a 6-2 run by the Falcons that pulled them within five (15-20). Messenger tallied a kill and ace during the run, while Harvey added another kill. Strikes from Russ and Markwardt brought Air Force within two (20-22), but the Spartans secured the final three points for the 25-20 win.

San Jose State struck first in the second, rolling out to an 11-2 lead before Harvey claimed the Falcons' first offensive point. Reinkensmeyer and Riggs tallied kills, but the Spartans extended their lead to double figures at the 16-6 mark. Reinkensmeyer added another kill and the Falcons benefitted from several SJSU errors, but the Spartans maintained their 10-point advantage (11-21) and eventually claimed the 25-14 victory.

Messenger earned the Falcons' first two kills of the third set (4-5) and added a solo block at the 5-9 mark for Air Force's first three points. Russ teamed up for a block with freshman Ashley Bible, while Markwardt and freshman Jordan Suan, who stepped into the libero position for the third set, added aces that helped Air Force pull within two at the 11-13 mark. The Spartans traded points with Messenger over a six-point stretch (kills at 12-14, 13-15, 14-16), while Harvey and Bible added kills, but San Jose State completed the sweep with a 25-17 win.

Air Force has a quick stopover at the Academy next week, as it closes out the first half of the conference season against Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 20.
