USAFA, Colo.- Tied at the halftime break, Air Force conceded a second-half score and was unable to find an equalizer, dropping Sunday's match 2-1.
"This one hurt because it definitely felt like we deserved to win this game," said head coach Laura Busby. "Despite missing half our starting lineup, I thought we outplayed them in every aspect except for goals."
After San Diego State managed a goal in the 12th minute, Caeli Sherman notched her first collegiate score to tie the match midway through the first-half. Cassi Bych lofted a corner kick into the penalty area, as the ball was redirected towards the freshman. Sherman managed to get a foot on the ball, tucking away the goal into the left corner.
Sherman led all players with nine total shots, including two on goal. Air Force managed 30 shots to just 11 for San Diego State. Eight of Air Force's 30 attempts were on goal.
"Two of our freshmen, Caeli Sherman and Eleanor Musgrove, gave strong performances and nearly got us an equalizer down the home stretch," Busby said.
Cammi Bych made her first appearance between the pipes since September 11, as the junior stopped two of the four shots she saw on goal.
The Aztecs manufactured a goal in the 65th minute, and in spite of 17 shot attempts over the final 45 minutes, the Falcons couldn't create a proper chance.
"We'll continue to work on creating quality goal-scoring opportunities and capitalize on our chances next game," Busby said.
Next, Air Force hits the road for a visit to Boise State on Thursday, October 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm MT.
