"That was the best performance we've had all year," said head coach Laura Busby. "Our defensive unit played well and we looked incredibly dangerous on the attacking side of the ball. Credit to our players for the work they have put in and their commitment to the process."
Freshman Caeli Sherman notched two goals on the evening, coming in the 29th and 40th minute. Sherman first scored as the result of a corner kick following interplay between Cassi Bych and Hannah Johnson. A Falcons set piece from the corner was initialize by a pass from Bych to Johnson, back to Bych, who lobbed a cross into the box where Sherman was positioned to tap home a left-footed score.
Just 11 minutes later, Sherman was on the front end of an Air Force counter attack. Peyton Ferrell found Sherman streaking down the middle of the pitch, hitting her fellow freshman in stride. Sherman then reversed course, turned her defender, and struck a well-placed shot to her left past an out of position Nevada keeper.
Setting the stage for the Sherman was Jenna Rubidoux, who gave the Falcons the early advantage within the match's first minute. Cassi Bych shook aside a Nevada defender during Air Force's initial possession, curling in a cross down the left side of the Falcons attack. Rubidoux was on the other end of the cross, though her initial headed attempt at goal was blocked. The sophomore's second chance at goal prove fruitful, awarding Air Force a 1-0 lead with just 58 seconds off the clock.
Sherman and Rubidoux are now tied for the team lead with three goals, while Bych and Ferrell also managed their first assists of the 2022 season.
Sydney Davis, the reigning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, was dependable yet again. The junior stopped four of the five shots on goal she faced, the lone exception being a penalty kick score resulting in the Wolfpack's only goal.
Air Force was consistently the more impactful side, posting 19 total shots to just just eight for Nevada. Rubidoux, Sherman, and Jordi Ives each managed three shots on goal.
"We are peaking at the right time of the year and I'm so proud of this talented group of young women," said Busby.
Next, the Falcons travel to UNLV on Sunday, October 23rd. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm MT.
