AIR FORCE ATHLETICS LAUNCHES NEW “CAPTAINS OF CAPTAINS” PROGRAM

USAF ACADEMY – Air Force Athletics new Captains of Captains program will take flight beginning the 2022-23 athletic season. The program is a key component and enabler of the Team Captain Enhancement Program (TCEP), the Athletic Department's premier Cadet-Athlete leadership development program for USAFA's Intercollegiate (IC) team captains. Among several key responsibilities, the Captains of Captains will serve on the Cadet Wing Staff as the single voice of advocacy for IC issues at the Cadet Wing's "Top 47" meeting. Additionally, they will assist the TCEP in working to continuously grow and strengthen a winning culture and warrior ethos among the IC teams.
"It's my honor to announce USAFA's first ever Captains of Captains -- congratulations to C1C Brookelyn Messenger of our Volleyball team and C2C Luke Row of our Ice Hockey team they exemplify the department's mission of forging leaders of character through the athletic experience. They're going to do a phenomenal job advancing the department's TCEP initiative, advocating for IC issues and concerns to USAFA senior leadership, and galvanizing partnerships with their peers external to USAFA." Colonel Andre Johnson, Vice Director of Athletics and TCEP Senior Advisor.
"Leading by example is just a small step in leadership, we want all our intercollegiate athletes to not only lead by example, but to also be great communicators. We think there is a disconnect between cadets that are ICs and cadets that are not ICs, and the disconnect is not serving our overall goal here at the Air Force Academy. A big part of this initiative is to bridge the disconnect. When we communicate well and band together as a big team, it makes us a force more capable of taking on much greater things— not only athletically but more importantly, militarily." C1C Brookelyn Messenger, Volleyball Team Captain and Captain of Captains.
"A goal of mine is to raise the standard for the athletes so that when ICs are in the Cadet Wing, they are setting the example and putting on display that we don't cut corners, we don't slouch on our duties— we want to be here and uphold our military responsibilities just as much as we want to win on the field, the mat, the rink. We work our tails off down here just the same as we do up there and it's up to us to show that to the Wing every day." C2C Luke Rowe, Hockey Team Captain and Captain of Captains.
In partnership with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Chair, the Captains of Captains will champion communication, integration, collaboration, and awareness with the goal of increasing cadet wing spirit and advancing the Academy's mission.
