New Mexico pulled within one at 19-18, but kills from Tschuor and Markwardt helped Air Force to set point and Russ put down the deciding kill for the Falcons' 25-21 victory.
Â
The Lobos jumped out to another fast 8-2 start and, although the Falcons pulled within three at 5-8 (Tschuor/Harvey block) and 9-12 (Johnson/Russ block), the Lobos wouldn't allow an early-set comeback to materialize, and Air Force entered the media timeout trailing 10-15. New Mexico pushed its lead to seven (20-13), but the Falcons scored the next six points to pull within one at the 19-20 mark. Johnson, Russ and Markwardt all tallied kills during the run, while Russ teamed up with both for a pair of blocks. Reinkensmeyer and Messenger added scores, but New Mexico evened the match with a 25-21 win.
Â
The opening minutes of the third set was all New Mexico, as it opened on a 13-1 run – a stretch only broken up by a kill from Neal. Markwardt tallied a kill and solo block during a 6-1 run by the Falcons (6-14), while an ace from Riggs and a kill from freshman Ashley Bible brought Air Force within five at the 11-16 mark.
