Falcons face Army and Navy for President’s Trophy

This Week: Three of the top 16 college rifle teams in the nation will compete for the President's Trophy, Saturday, Nov. 5, in Annapolis, Md. Air Force, ranked eighth in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, will battle No. 11 Navy and No. 16 Army. The match begins at 9 am ET. Air Force will then compete against Army in a dual meet on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 9 am ET in Annapolis, Md.
About the President's Trophy: The first President's Trophy match was contested in 1998 against Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and U.S. Merchant Marine. In 1998, Army was the host site for the inaugural event, as Navy won its first of seven titles with a score of 7601. The Black Knights were the runner up, followed by the Falcons with scores of 7384 and 7535, respectively, using the 120/40 shot scoring system. Prior to 2003, scoring for the match was based on the 120/40 shot scoring system for both smallbore and air rifle. The new system was implemented in 2004 with a 60/60 shot system for both rifles. Scores identified are based on the five-counter method. In the 24-year history of the President's Trophy Match, Air Force has won nine titles, including the last eight. Army has won the title eight times, while Navy has seven titles. The match is held annually in November, and is rotated between the three academies.
Last Season: Air Force won its eighth straight President's Cup, the longest streak of any team in the history of the trophy dating back to 1998, in 2021. Air Force posted a school record team aggregate score of 5883. Navy came in second (5850), Army third (5837) and Coast Guard fourth (2263). The Falcons won the smallbore with a 2905 and the air rifle with a 2978. Freshman Scott Rockett was the top Falcon in aggregate score with an 1183. Peninah D'Souza and Lauren Hurley tied for second at 1177. The weekend concluded with a 4701-4675 win over Army in a dual meet, Nov. 7. Rockett led the Falcons by winning aggregate competition with an 1186. D'Souza was third (1179), Jordan Williams was fourth (1175) and Devin Schwindt (1170) was fifth.
Recently: For the second straight day, Air Force placed second in a tri-meet against No. 2 West Virginia and No. 19 UTEP, Oct. 16, at the Academy's Cadet Rifle Range. West Virginia won the meet with a score of 4715, while Air Force was second (4690) and UTEP was third (4568). Sophomore Lauren Hurley was the top individual, posting an aggregate score of 1181, a new career high. Junior Morgan Kreb was fourth overall at 1177. Freshman Victoria Leppert and senior Jordan Williams tied for ninth (1164). Air Force posted the top two scores in smallbore as Kreb shot a career-best 590 and Hurley shot a career-best 585. Williams and junior Dante Aletto each shot 578 and Leppert shot 574.Hurley shot the best air rifle score of the day with a 596. Leppert shot 590, followed by Kreb (587), Williams (586) and Aletto (581).
National Rankings: Junior Peninah D'Souza and sophomore Scott Rockett are tied for the team's best aggregate score of 1186, tied as the 17th best in the nation. D'Souza's 599 in air rifle (Oct. 2) is tied as the second best in the nation. Rockett's 598 (Oct. 22) is tied as the 10th best.
