USAF ACADEMY – Falcon wrestling outscored Wyoming, 25-11, knocking down the Pokes for the first time since 2008, Saturday evening in Clune Arena. Air Force, now 2-0 in dual action, swept the final five bouts of the meet and posted bonus point wins in two weight classes.
Action started at 141 pounds where Darren Green posted a major decision (11-3) over Nick Krug. The Falcons responded with a win at 149 as veteran wrestler Dylan Martinez posted a convincing 8-1 win over Chase Zollman to put points on the board. Martinez's win over Zollman is the second this season.
The tit-for-tat continued at 157 as Bryce Dauphin narrowly escaped AF junior Garrett Bowers, 4-2. Air Force junior Giano Petrucelli struck back with a 4-2 decision over Cole Moody in the 165 class for his 11th win this season. The win over Moody marked the second win over the Poke for Petrucelli, besting him the week prior at CKLV.
At 174, three-time NCAA qualifier No. 14 Hayden Hastings upheld his reputation with a 9-0 major decision over sophomore Falcon Gage Musser, giving the Pokes their largest lead of the night, 11-6. It would be the last taste of victory for the Cowboys on the evening.
Noah Blake took the mat in the 184 class, grinding to a 2-1 decision win via riding time point over Brett McIntosh. The win marked Blake's 10th this season. In the ensuing 197 bout, Calvin Sund took the mat a man on a mission, outworking and overpowering Guillermo Escobedo to a 4-0 decision win with a riding time point to bring the Falcons within one point on the team cards, 12-11.
At heavyweight, Air Force's No. 6 Wyatt Hendrickson put on a clinic for the fans in Clune Arena, scoring takedowns at will and working the ride. Swartz was stubborn on bottom doing everything in his power to prevent the bonus point win—Hendrickson was having none of it, outworking the Poke to turn him on his back for the pin. Hendrickson is 12-1 this season with an 87-percent bonus point rate.
Falcon freshman Tucker Owens took the mat with the chance to seal the deal on the team score, he was unphased by the task. Owens scored the first takedown and tilted Garrett Ricks for back exposure points. Owens was convincing in his 6-2 decision win, marking his 13th win this season for the most on the team.
With the meet in the bag, senior leader No. 21 Cody Phippen took the mat as one cool customer. Phippen hosted a scoring clinic on Aidan Noonan, posting a 10-0 major decision to seal the deal on the dual, 25-11.
"I'm really proud of the guys tonight, it was a culture win for us," head coach Sam Barber said. "We have a culture of doing the right things and doing them long enough to see the result, and tonight we did that. It's promising when you see your guys in tight matches make the match go their way, often to the gritty end. We were aware of the team score towards the end and the guys did a great job not letting the circumstance and hype of the moment be than completing the mission. They ceased the opportunity tonight. We're grateful but we're never satisfied, we're going to continue the growth and we want to achieve our goals of being a top-25 team and sending guys to the NCAAs."
Next up, following the holiday break and into the New Year, the Falcons return to action for the Franklin & Marshall David Lehman Open slated for January 6, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
