DENVER – Air Force concluded Denver's First Chance Invite with four top finishes and a myriad of personal-best times, highlighted by two Air Force season-best times, Saturday afternoon at the El Pomar Natatorium.
Air Force junior Gina Jenkins had a career day, swimming into the Air Force record books in two categories, all in one swim. The native of Aurora, Illinois, finished with the best time in the 1,650 freestyle, clocking a 17:05.08 for the seventh-best time in the Academy record books, and the fastest time by any Falcon in the event this season. Jenkins split her time for AF's top-time this season in the 1,000 free (10:22.78), marking the seventh fastest time in the program record book. Jenkins rounded out her day with a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:59.71), marking the second-best time by any Falcon this season.
Sophomore teammate Kendra Joachim paced Jenkins in the 500 freestyle, winning the top-spot with a 4:56.55; the best time by any Falcon this season.
Air Force swimmers also took the top spot in the 400 IM and 50 freestyle. Caroline Wittich swam to first with a 4:31.46 in the former, while Brooke Costella tied for first in the 50 freestyle with a 23.79. Costella's time is the third fastest by a Falcon in the 50 free this season. Costella also finished second in the 100 freestyle (52.37).
Other Falcons to finish in the top-three were Audrey Hines (1:04.84, 2nd) and June Phang (1:06.88, 3rd) in the 100 breaststroke. Emily Bardak finished second in the 200 fly with a 2:06.18 for the fifth-best time by a Falcon this season. Isabelle Gelle swam to a third-place finish in the 1650 free with a 17:30.60.
Time conversions for altitude were made per USA Swimming's Altitude Adjustments policy (14.4.6).
"The 14 girls who swam at this meet took advantage of the opportunities and swam great," head coach Colleen Murphy said. "We had some amazing wins and lots of best times."
"Four of our seniors completed their Air Force swimming careers this weekend. We are so proud of their dedication and commitment to our team; they have truly left a legacy and made our team better."
