HOUSTON – Air Force had a stellar opening day of the 2022 WAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, concluding the first day with three podium finishes, three Academy records-- alongside a WAC record, and a league champion diver in freshman Alex Kenyon, Wednesday afternoon, at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.
The first school record of the evening was set by junior standout Wen Zhang in the 800 free relay. Zhang, who has more top finishes than any AF swimmer this season, swam a program-best 200 leadoff in the 800 free, outpacing any opposing first-leg swimmers and setting a WAC record in the effort. Teammates Adam Grimm, Grant Afman, and Jacob Bulseco helped the Falcons to their second program record of the evening as the squad swam to a 6:24.17 finish for a top mark in the Academy 800M free relay books. The quartet finished second in the event.
Before the ink was dry from the first impact of the AF record book, Kenyon, who opened the preliminary morning session with second-position score (316.55), pushed the Air Force pace in the finals to claim the title in the 3-meter dive, scoring a program-best 378.60. Kenyon is Air Force's second WAC 3-meter diving champ since Bo Bloomer in 1991.
The Falcons also had an exceptional showing in the 200 medley relay as Gabe Bartolomei, Tory Bartlett, Andrew Limpert and Corey Shepard finished third with a 1:27.83 finish in the event.
Falcon diver Jack Macceca finished with a 285.40 in the consolation finals, while teammate Erik Pfaffenbichler finished with a 232.30
The Falcons continue WAC Championship action, Thursday morning at the CRWC Natatorium.
