USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis defeated #68 San Diego State, 4-0, in a Mountain West match Friday morning at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. It was the first-ever win over the ranked Aztecs, improving the team to 17-6, 6-3 MW.
Air Force extended its program record for conference wins to six, with the previous record being four wins.
The Falcons were dominant from the get-go, winning a pair in doubles play for the doubles point. Vivian Glozman and Karina Chao won at No. 1 over Arnold/Pitts 6-4. Sydney Fitch and Isabella Flodin won at No. 2 to clinch, downing Nadozie/Melosch 6-4.
In singles play, the Falcons went a perfect 3-0 to claim the win. Alexis Odom opened with a win in straight sets at No. 3 over Regina Pitts, 6-3, 6-4. Glozman then won in straight sets at No. 1 over Tamara Arnold 7-5, 6-2. The clinching win came from Sydney Fitch at No. 2. Fitch rallied back from a 1-0 deficit to win in three sets over Nnena Nadozie 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Head coach Kim Gidley recapping the day:
"No.2 doubles set the tone for the match today. I was so proud of Izzy (Flodin) and Syd (Fitch) for their fight and discipline. They have been there so close this Spring and they played like rock stars to close the match out and give the team their first doubles win. Then we had match points at No. 1 & 3, but the team of Viv (Glozman) & Karina (Chao) closed it out. They are 9-0 in the conference at No. 1 and have been crushing it all season long. The team battled hard in the singles and I was so proud of Alexis Odom for being the first match off the court in straight sets. She has worked so hard this season and has made such big improvements. It is exciting to see. Both our No.1 & 2 had to battle, but Viv and Syd were each able to close it out at the top of the line-up. It is fun to win against the top programs, so we will enjoy it for this afternoon and then be ready to battle back for UNLV."
Air Force returns to action tomorrow morning at 10 am, hosting UNLV on senior day. The match is slated for a 10 am MT start.
