USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis fell to UNLV, 4-3, in Mountain West play Saturday morning at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. The Fal-cons capped the regular season with a 17-7, 6-4 MW record.
The Falcons lost the doubles point and went 3-3 in singles play.
In doubles, Air Force's No. 1 duo or Vivian Glozman and Karina Chao defeated Helgesson/Kovacs 6-4. The duo went a perfect 10-0 in MW competition, the first at Air Force to acheive the feat. UNLV won at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the point.
In singles, the Falcons opened with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 to head a 2-1 lead. Sydney Fitch won at No. 2 over Zita Kovacs 6-3, 6-4. Glozman then won at No. 1 over Molly Helgesson 7-6, 6-0. Glozman completed the MW season by going a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles, the first-ever to do so at Air Force at No. 1.
UNLV tied the match up with a win at No. 3. Karina Chao then put the Falcons back up 3-2 with a win at No. 4, over Cindy Hu 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
The Falcons were unable to get the clinching point, as they dropped the matches at No. 5 and No. 6.
Prior to the match, the Falcons honored senior Alex Kuo and Vivian Glozman (freshman academically, but fifth-year senior for tennis) as part of senior day festivities.
Air Force returns to action the MW Championships, held April 27-30 in Tucson, Ariz. The Falcons open the tournament with a rematch against UNLV.
Coach Kim Gidley Recapping the UNLV Match:
"What a way to finish out the regular season for this team. They had so many first time accomplishments this year and I could not be prouder of them. We lost a super tight doubles point, that could of gone either way. Our No. 2 team of Fitch and Flodin were right there again, but could not convert to fall 7-5. For the team of Vivian Glozman and Karina Chao, they finished first with a win. Their individual win allowed them to finish conference play with a perfect 10-0 record at No. 1. That is impressive and puts the two of them as the all-time leader for Air Force Academy conference wins. The doubles duo is 21-1 for the spring in dual matches which puts them in second place for Air Force Academy history and they have the highest win percentage at No. 1 with a 24-1 record together. In the singles, the team came out strong and Sydney Fitch was the first one off the court with a straight set win. Syd has been on a roll after her epic match vs. Utah State in which the team lost 4-3 also. I am hoping the team responds like Sydney did going into the conference tournament. She took a heart break of a loss and has really raised her game since then. Vivian Glozman soon followed with a straight set win at no. 1 to give the Falcons a 3-0. Vivian went undefeated in conference play at No. 1 singles with a perfect 7-0 record, the first number one position for singles to do this. For the spring season, Vivian has a 18-0 record at no. 1 singles – another Air Force Academy first and is 24-2 on the year going into the conference tournament. Alexis Odom lost a tough three set match at No. 3 for the match to be tied at two-all before Karina Chao closed out her three set match 6-0 in the third to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. Then we had to pull Hailey Stelse out of the lineup and move everyone else up. Both our No. 5 & 6 (Alex and Izzy) pushed their opponents to the limit. In the end, the match was 3-3 and in the third set with our senior, Alex Kuo. Alex gave it everything and just fell short. The loss will put the Falcons as the no. 5 seed going into the Mountain West Conference Tournament starting on Wednesday, where they will turn around and play the no. 4 seed UNLV. I can't wait for a second chance. This was a big weekend for the team and I look for them to continue to make history."
