USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis opens play the 2022 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championships against fourth-seeded San Diego State on Friday, April 29. Air Force is the host school of the championships, which run April 29-May 1, at the Air Force tennis courts on the Academy grounds.
A QUICK LOOK AT AIR FORCE: Air Force enters the tournament as the five-seed and are coming off one of the best seasons in program history. The Falcons are 15-8 on the season and tied for third place with a 3-3 record in conference play. The 15 wins are the most since 2005 and the three conference wins and third place finish are both the best in the MW era.
Air Force is led by senior Robert Baylon at No. 1 singles. Baylon is 23-11 on the season in singles and 43-22 overall. Baylon and doubles duo Jordan Azuma combined to go 5-0 at No. 1 doubles in MW play. The duo did not lose a conference doubles match the past two seasons.
A QUICK LOOK AT SAN DIEGO STATE: San Diego State enters the tournament with a 7-19 overall record and 3-3 mark in MW play. Joe Tyler leads the Aztecs in singles with a 16-8 overall singles record (7-4 at No. 1) and is 31-18 overall.
LAST MEETING: San Diego State took the first meeting 4-1 on March 13 at SDSU. The Falcons earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (Azuma/Baylon) and No. 3 (Mascagni/Vroman). The Falcons dropped four singles matches in straight sets to the Aztecs.
LAST TIME AT MW CHAMPIONSHIPS: Air Force last participated in the MW Championships in 2019. The eight-seeded Falcons fell to top-seed New Mexico, 4-0, on April 25, 2019, at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif.
