USAF ACADEMY – Air Force outscored Bellarmine in the regular season finale, 9-7, Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. The Falcons, now 8-6 with a 3-2 ASUN record, secured a third-place finish in the league and the third seed at conference tournament next week. The Knights, now the fourth seed, drop to 4-12 overall with a 2-3 mark in the league.
Prior to the first face off, nine Falcons were honored for Senior Day. Quentin Carlile, Brenden Crouse, Chase Douglas, Cole Grindberg, August Johnson, Christian Marshall, Brian Michael, Ian Mullins and Caden Wolfson suited up for the final time as Falcons at Falcon Stadium. The class of 2022 had a hand in the 2019 regular season SOCON Co-Championship, three conference tournament appearances and tallied 26 wins in their four years despite a shortened season in 2020.
The Falcons dominated the first half of play, outscoring Bellarmine 5-1 at the halftime break. Air Force had a stellar second period as they shut Bellarmine out, 4-0. The Knights broke their scoring drought with two goals in the third period and four in the fourth period, outscoring the Falcons by two goals in the second half.
Falcon senior Brenden Crouse led the scoring effort for Air Force, tallying two goals on the game for his 50th and 51st points of the season. ASUN goals leader Brandon Dodd put up a goal and three assists on the game, tallying his 68th point this season for a new program record. Mike Crampton ('14) previously held the single-season points record (66) and still maintains the single-season goals record with 48 to his credit. Dodd has 45 heading into the league tournament. For the first time since joining Division I lacrosse, Air Force has a pair of players with 50 or more points on the season.
Other Falcon scorers include Wes and Gavin Peene, Alexander Stepney, Chase Douglas, and Tommy Hellman. Senior middie Cole Grindberg tallied his second assist of the season in the effort.
Quentin Carlile and James Chastain led the defensive effort with an impressive four caused turnovers apiece while combining for 10 ground balls, seven of which were picked up by Carlile. Carlile notched the 88th CT of his career, overtaking the previous CT record holder Brandon Jones ('19) who finished his career with 84. Senior teammate Caden Wolfson could be found disrupting the Bellarmine offense with a pair of CTs to his credit. AF caused 15 of the Knights' 18 turnovers.
Senior face off middie Brian Michael was fantastic at the center dot, winning a perfect 10-of-10 face off attempts and collecting five ground balls. The Falcons won 13-20 faceoffs on the day. Jason Rose, the ASUN's leading save-percentage goalie, earned his eighth win of the season making nine saves against 25 Bellarmine shots.
The Knights were led by Benny O'Rourk whose two goals kept the team alive in the fourth quarter. Teammate Hayden Brown notched a goal and a pair off assists to bolster the Bellarmine offensive stat sheet.
Next up, Air Force and Bellarmine head to Huntsville, Alabama, as the third and fourth seeds respectively, in the ASUN Conference Tournament. Air Force will take on second-seed Robert Morris on Thursday, May 5, while Bellarmine meets with regular season ASUN Champions in Utah the same day.
