Falcons Open Action at NCBA Championships

Lawrence Barrett advanced to the semifinals follow a unanimous victory at 125 pounds.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Seven members of the Air Force boxing team opened competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships last night (April 7) at the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina. Senior Lawrence Barrett and junior Alan Long captured victories to advance out of the quarterfinal round and lead the Falcons' contingent on Thursday.
Barrett easily advanced into the 125-pound semifinal with a unanimous decision over California's Ryan Everly, while Long captured a 3-2 victory over Penn State's Matthew Manchon to move on at 165 pounds. Senior Ayaz Mustafa also competed on Thursday, but dropped a narrow, 156-pound decision (2-3) to Kole Songonuga from Navy.
Air Force went 0-4 on the women's side during quarterfinal action, with senior Maddie Lloyd and sophomore Mack Lucas suffering narrow, split decision losses in their bouts. Lloyd dropped a 2-3 decision to Navy's Gabi Shultz at 132 pounds, while Lucas saw the judges' cards fall in the same direction during her 147-pound loss to Iowa State's McKenzie Stewart. Senior Sam Thompson and junior Susan Yeung also competed on Thursday, falling by 5-0 margins at 112 pounds (Washington's Thea Weiss) and 139 pounds (Navy's Jasmine Brown), respectively.
Action continues at the NCBA Championships this evening (April 8) with the national semifinals, which are slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. (ET) inside the Charlotte Convention Center.
