CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Air Force boxing team posted a 6-5 record during the semifinal round of action at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships last night (April 8) at the Charlotte Convention Center. The men earned all six of the Falcons' victories, splitting the wins between the two semifinal rings.
The Falcons captured four victories over their counterparts from Army West Point, including three unanimous decisions. Senior Maksat Omar and junior Walker Morris earned 5-0 wins in Ring 1, while senior Lawrence Barrett and junior Tyler Dalzell earned their victories in Ring 2. Omar easily defeated Bilgunn Purevdorj in a 132-pound matchup, while Morris swept the judges votes in his 185-pound semifinal with Jonathan Parnham. Dalzell also won by unanimous decision, as he defeated Michael Matthew at 147 pounds, and Barnett earned a split win over Brandon Agran in his second 125-pound contest of the weekend. Junior Alan Long, who – like Barrett – boxed in the quarterfinal, earned a 3-2 victory over Navy's Peyton Seago at 165 ppunds, while sophomore Victor Benitez rounded out the Falcons' list of Friday night victors with a split heavyweight decision over Jean Louis Sunther of Penn State.
Sophomores Leo Camacho and Angelo Ganac, as well as senior Zach Phillips, also competed in the semifinal round. Camacho dropped a majority decision to Penn State's Gabriel Cruz at 119 pounds, while Ganac lost a 5-0 decision in his 195-pound semifinal with Matthew Beason of Army West Point. Phillips, who represented the Falcons in Ring 2, also ended on the wrong side of a unanimous decision in his 139-pound bout with Navy's Adrain Johnson.
On the women's side, sophomore Cat Tak and junior Allyah Marlett dropped decisions to their counterparts from Army West Point on Thursday, as Tak dropped a 119-pound semifinal to Sharnae Harmon and Marlett lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Ruby Romsland at 165 pounds.
The Falcons close out the NCBA Championship – and the 2021-22 season – tonight (April 9) during the finals of the NCBA Championships.
