CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three members of the Air Force boxing team captured national title belts this evening (April 9) during the finals of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships at the Charlotte Convention Center. The men, who went 3-3 on Championship Saturday, finished second in the team standings.
Junior Walker Morris, who was named the Outstanding Boxer of the Championships for the upper weight divisions, defeated Navy's Jake Jones after forcing the referee to halt the 185-pound championship in the second round. Morris was one of two champions for Air Force during the afternoon session, as sophomore Victor Benitez defeated Army West Point's Spencer Roy (3-2) in the heavyweight division for his first championship title. Senior Lawrence Barrett, the only Air Force finalist that competed in the last (2019) NCBA Championship event, captured his first national title after earning a split decision over Penn State's Brett Rosoff-Verbit in the 125-pound final during the evening session.
Junior Alan Long earned runner-up honors in the afternoon after falling by a narrow 2-3 decision to Washington's Abdiraham Omar in the 165-pound championship, while senior Maksat Omar and junior Tyler Dalzell earned the same placement in the evening session, as Omar fell to Cincinnati's John Laughlin in third-round of the 132-pound final and Dalzell lost his 147-pound championship to Navy's Aiden McNally.
