The four Academic All-District selections are the most in program history.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – A program-record four members of the Air Force track and field team – recently commissioned second lieutenants Sean Geither, Jenna Kill, Will Kitzhaber and Erika Willis – were named to the Academic All-District VII Track/Field and Cross Country Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced this afternoon (May 26). Earning first-team distinction, the quartet will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
Geither, ranked 12th in the Academy's Class of 2022, completed the final grading period before nominations opened (Fall 2021) with a 3.96 GPA in aeronautical engineering. A member of two Mountain West champion outdoor relays (4x400 in 2021, 4x100 in 2022), Geither is listed among the program's Top 25 in the sprint events, including a No. 11 time of 21.31 in the outdoor 200-meter dash.
Kill and Kitzhaber captured MVP honors of their respective cross country teams this fall, with Kill finishing the fall semester with a 3.78 GPA in applied mathematics and Kitzhaber maintaining a 3.51 GPA in legal studies. Both runners scored for the Falcons in all three MW Championship meets (cross country, indoor, outdoor) this year, with Kitzhaber earning the fourth all-conference honor of his career during a third-place finish in the 5000-meter run at the 2022 MW Indoor Championships. Kill finished her career ranked among the program's top 10 in the mile and 1500-meter run, as well as a pair of top-10 relays (4x1600-meter run, distance medley relay), while Kitzhaber holds Air Force Top 5 times in the (indoor) 5000-meter run and 10,000-meter run, while also holding top-25 marks in the other distance events.
Willis marked the third-straight year that a pole vaulter has claimed Academic All-District honors, as she completed the fall semester with a 3.81 GPA in biology. A scoring performer at both conference championships this year (indoor/outdoor), Willis finished her career tied for fifth in the outdoor pole vault and ranked among the program's top-15 in the indoor event.
To be nominated for CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution, be a significant contributor, and carry a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.30 or higher. The academic awards for District VII are voted on by CoSIDA members from the NCAA DI programs in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.
With the selection of Geither, Kill, Kitzhaber and Willis to the Academic All-District team, the Falcons' track and field program has seen 27 different athletes combine for 33 academic honors from CoSIDA since the program began in 2002 – and has had at least one selection to the Academic All-District VII Track/Field and Cross Country Team during 16 of the last 17 years.
