Gilman's 5000-meter time of 13:30.82 is the third-fastest time in MW history.
EUGENE, Ore. – Backed by an Academy Record performance in the 5000-meter run, Sam Gilman capped his remarkable junior campaign with first-team All-America honors this evening (June 10), as the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up in Eugene, Oregon.
Gilman crossed the finish line in a program-record time of 13:30.82 – a finish that took nearly a second off Patrick Corona's 2017 standard and a mark that ranks as the third-fastest time in Mountain West history.
The junior, who stayed near the back of the 24-runner pack for the first 3000 meters, began to work his way through the group over the next two laps and used the fastest time of all runners at the 3800-meter split (1:02.61) to move into the top 16. He gained eight more spots over the next two laps to secure first-team All-America status and then used a 55.75 final sprint to claim the top-five finish – the best finish by a member of the men's team since 2015.
The All-America trophy marked the third such award of the year for Gilman, who captured All-America honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. It is also the fourth individual Academy Record of the year for the junior, who tallied program-best marks in the mile, 3000-meter and 5000-meter events during the indoor season, while anchoring the distance medley relay to a school standard this winter.
The four points from Gilman's finish put Air Force in a tie for 54th in the men's team standings, as the Falcons were the only conference or service academy team to score at the national meet.
