USAFA, Colo.- First-year head coach Laura Busby was visibly enlivened during the pregame portion of tonight's match. Her excitement went up a few notches moments after the final whistle, as the Falcons outlasted the Black Knights in Friday's 2-1 victory.
The Falcons triumph over the Black Knights marks Busby's first win at Air Force.
"I am so proud of our grit and determination tonight," said Busby. "To give up an unfortunate goal early and then respond the way we did, I was so proud. Tonight showed what Air Force soccer is all about."
The Falcons faced immediate trouble just two minutes in, as Army saw an Air Force own goal give the Black Knights a quick 1-0 lead.
However, just five minutes later, Caeli Sherman made a run along the left sideline before sending a cross into the box. Jenna Rubidoux received the Sherman cross, made a defender miss, and slotted home a well-placed curling shot to tie the score.
Rubidoux's goal becomes the second of her collegiate career and her first score since Air Force's win at Navy a season ago.
Following Rubidoux's goal, the Falcons proceeded to take control of the pitch for the remainder of the half. In the 41st minute, Audrey Colter took advantage of the Falcons constant attack.
A long ball into the box ricocheted towards Colter, who settled the ball under her right foot, tucking away a well-placed shot into the top right corner of the net, giving Air Force a 2-1 lead.
The score marks Colter's first-career goal.
The Falcons were the more offensive side, controlling most of the game's possession. The Falcons outshot the Black Knights 17-6, while Air Force goalkeeper Cammi Bych was required to make just one save over the course of the evening.
Air Force is now 3-0-1 over the past four meetings with Army.
"We will celebrate our first win as a staff and then start preparing for another big home match on Sunday," said Busby.
The Falcons will look to put a stamp on the weekend as Air Force hosts Bucknell on Sunday, August 28. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm MT.
