Air Force Unable to Hold Off Cal Baptist

Air Force out-served the Lancers, 11-5, in the five-set loss.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Unable to hold off a late comeback by Cal Baptist, the Air Force volleyball team suffered a tough five-set loss to the Lancers this afternoon (Sept. 10) in their final match of the CBU Volleyball Classic. Despite out-acing their opponents 11-6, the Falcons fell in 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 11-15 sets at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside.

Backed by a season-high 15 kills from junior Joi Harvey on .609 hitting (15-1-23), four different Falcons posted double-digit kill totals in the match. Classmate Savannah Neal tallied 12 on .417 hitting (12-2-24), while senior BrookeLyn Messenger and freshman Ashley Bible added tallies of 11 and 10, respectively. Junior Allie Griffith tallied three of the team's 11 aces – the second-highest total of the season, as seven different Falcons recorded at least one score from the serving line. Junior Caroline Reinkensmeyer, who added a pair of aces in the match, accounted for 27 assists , while Messenger – the other multi-ace Falcon – added a team-high 16 digs for a double-double. Harvey rounded out the Falcons' stat leaders with eight blocks, including three solo stops.

Messenger registered the Falcons' first offensive point of the match (2-1) and added a second, while a service ace from sophomore Murphy Riggs put the Falcons up 4-2. The Lancers seven of the next nine points to take a 9-6 advantage, before sophomore Ellie Eichhorn (kill) and Messenger (solo block) stopped their run with back-to-back points that brought Air Force within one (8-9). A kill from sophomore Mac Russ and an ace from Reinkensmeyer broke up a 6-2 run by CBU, before Messenger sparked a 6-2 run by the Falcons that tied the set at 17. The senior team captain registered a service ace during the run, while Bible added a kill and Harvey posted the team's second solo stop of the set. CBU retook the lead on the next play, but a pair of aces from Griffith, as well as a kill from Eichhorn and a block from Russ and Neal, highlighted a five-point run by the Falcons (22-18). The Lancers scored the next three to pull within one (22-21) but kills from Messenger and Bible – with the latter's strike following a leaping save by the freshman – secured the Falcons' 25-21 victory.

Despite another Reinkensmeyer ace and a kill from sophomore Ella Tschuor, the Lancers used a 6-1 run to even the set at 17. Harvey broke the run with a kill, but CBU scored four straight to take a 22-19 advantage. Neal recorded a kill and served up an ace, but the Lancers evened the match with a narrow 25-23 win.
