Air Force Women’s Tennis Opens Day One At ITA Bedford Cup

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis opened play at the 2022 ITA Bedford Cup In The Mountains this Thursday afternoon at the Air Force Outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Courts. The tournament opened with the first round of doubles play.

The Falcons went 3-1 on the day with wins in each of the three draws.

In the Alpha draw senior Sydney Fitch and sophomore Alexis Odom downed Davies/Lombardi of Weber State 8-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the Bravo draw, Senior Courtney Swift and sophomore Kayleigh Yun-Thayer defeated Horacek/Dowse of Idaho 8-5 to advance. Sophomore Andre Le and freshman Arianna Van Houweling fell to Cho/Kuruvilla of Idaho State 8-5 and will move to the consolation bracket.

In the Charlie draw, freshman Abby Cotuna and senior Shailla Alda defeated Hilario/Brilhante of Utah State 8-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Head coach Kim Gidley on day one play:
"It was a beautiful afternoon to start our 4th Bedford Cup in the Mountains tennis tournament here at the Air Force Academy. I was extremely pleased with our play in doubles for the short amount of time we have had in practice. The team worked through some nervous energy and into the matches. Anytime you can not panic and stay in the match and fight is a good thing. It will be fun to watch this team grow from match to match. A special edition to the tournament was the baseball team grilling for all 100 players/staff after competing and then having the Wings of Blue jump into the baseball field. It was an exciting atmosphere and always great when you get support from other teams."

Competition resumes tomorrow with doubles and singles, beginning at 9 am.
