AF outshot its opponent for the first time this season, putting up 13 shots to Bowling Green's nine. The Air Force put five shots on target with extremely narrow misses throughout. Thaddaeus Dewing and Jacob Angeletti led the Falcons with three shots apiece. Nine AF shots were taken in an active first half.
The first strike of the match came in the 46th minute as Kale Nichols fed Kyle Cusimano from the far wing. Dewing, Air Force's leading goal scorer, equalized the match in the 65th minute with a ball threaded between a defender and the keeper's legs for the goal.
BGSU responded five minutes later with a goal from Alberto Anaya. An insurance goal was put up in the 75th minute via Segi Martinez. The AF Falcons struggled to connect on opportunities as the clock ticked down.
Senior keeper John Byszewski recorded four saves in the defensive effort. London Aghedo, Jake Chaffetz and Wills Burns anchored the defense with 90 minutes of action each.
"It's tough to lose your home opener," head coach Doug Hill said. "I thought we played well enough in the first half, but we didn't put our chances in. After their second goal we couldn't get back into our rhythm. Credit to Bowling Green for making some tough saves on the goal line. Their record doesn't reflect how good they are as a team. We had enough shots and enough chances; we're going to work on putting a full match together. We're hungry for a win.
Next up, the Falcons head back on the road for the first of a three-match road stint. Air Force takes San Francisco on Sunday (Sept. 25). Action is slated for 1 p.m. PT. The following weekend, AF opens the WAC slate at UNLV on September 30, and Utah Tech on October 2.
