ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Falcons head back on the road for the first of a three-match road stint. The Falcons take on San Francisco on Sunday (Sept. 25). Action is slated for 1 p.m. PT. The following weekend, AF opens the WAC slate at UNLV on September 30, and Utah Tech on October 2.
THE SERIES AGAINST THE DONS
Air Force and San Francisco will be meeting for the fourth time with the Falcons holding the series lead, 2-1. The last time the teams played was at USAFA in 2018 where AF downed the Dons, 2-1. The Falcons are on a two-match winning streak against USF, winning in their first-ever visit to San Francisco in 2016, 4-3.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite numerous opportunities on goal, a stale second half ended in an Air Force loss to Bowling Green, 3-1, in non-conference action Saturday evening (Sept. 17) at Cadet Soccer Stadium. AF drops to 0-4-2 while Bowling Green improved to 1-3-2 in their first win.
AF outshot its opponent for the first time this season, putting up 13 shots to Bowling Green's nine. The Air Force put five shots on target with extremely narrow misses throughout. Thaddaeus Dewing and Jacob Angeletti led the Falcons with three shots apiece. Nine AF shots were taken in an active first half.
AN UNEXPECTED TURNOUT
After trailing for 86 minutes the Falcons battled the third-ranked Washington Huskies to a draw at one be-hind an incredible strike in the 88th minute, handing the PAC 12 powerhouse their first non-winning result of the season. Air Force (0-3-2) wraps up an arduous five-game road stint on a high note with the draw. Washington, held to one goal for the first time this season, remains undefeated at 4-0-1.
Air Force's tenacity as a team was on full display, highlighted by an outstanding defensive effort to stave off a talented and aggressive Washington offense that put up 19 shots. Senior goalie John Byszewski played like a championship keeper, recording two crucial saves against penalty kicks to keep the Falcons alive.
EARLY SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
-Falcon keeper John Byszewski had a career night with nine saves against an aggressive No. 25 Missouri State offense. The draw marked Byszewki's first collegiate shutout and the Bears' first scoreless match of the 2022 campaign.
-Thaddaeus Dewing is AF's key striker, notching the Falcons' only goals on the season thus far—both of which against tough ACC teams in No. 24 North Carolina and No. 15 Wake Forest. Dewing has 12 career goals in 38 career appearances for the most goals on the team.
-London Aghedo and Tyler Johnson, AF's key defenders, missed the match at Central Arkansas where the Falcons dropped a 3-1 contest. They were also sidelined in the match at No. 3 Washington where the Falcons tied the Huskies at one

AROUND THE WAC
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST, GRAND CANYON TIED AT 3-3-1
Entering the final full week of nonconference play, California Baptist and Grand Canyon have been the top two men's soccer programs in the WAC with matching 3-3-1 records as of Sept. 21. The Lancers have put together an impressive 3-0-1 mark in home matches thus far in the 2022 campaign.
GRAND CANYON GOES TO THE WIRE WITH UC SANTA BARBARA
Grand Canyon picked up a key nonconference result in a spirited 2-2 draw at No. 18 UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 17, holding the lead until late in the contest before an equalizer from the hosts spoiled the potential win for the Lopes. Alec LaBarge served up the primary assist on a Samuel Lossou goal to kickstart the scoring at 13:33, and LaBarge tallied an unassisted goal of his own at 18:18 for the 2-0 GCU lead. UCSB kept the run of play relatively even and scratched back with goals in the 39th and 88th minutes to salvage the draw.
ENGELS MAKES AN IMPACT FROM THE UTRGV DEFENSE
UTRGV defender Jan Engels was a key player on both sides of the field for the Vaqueros during an impressive 4-1 win over Omaha on Sept. 17. Engels had a hand in three of the four goals on the day for UTRGV, serving the primary assist on the first two goals before hitting the back of the net on his own to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute. Engels captured conference offensive player of the week accolades following his four-point effort that also saw UTRGV limit Omaha to six total shots and two attempts on goal in the victory.
SNAGGING BRACES IN THE WAC
Houston Baptist's Bryant Farkarlun became the fifth different player from the WAC this season with a two-goal performance during a Sept. 17 game with Eastern Illinois. Other conference players with a brace thus far this season are HBU's Ethan Giwa-McNeil (Cal Poly, Sept. 5), CBU's Bryan Iliohan (Gonzaga on Sept. 1), GCU's Alec LaBarge (No. 4 UCLA on Sept. 5) and Seattle U's Declan McGlynn (No. 4 Notre Dame on Aug. 25).
