USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis wrapped up the fourth and final day at the 2022 ITA Bedford Cup In The Mountains this Sunday early afternoon at the Air Force Outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Courts.
Air Force had seven wins on the final day, including a perfect 3-0 sweep in doubles. Freshman Abby Cotuna earned second place in the Bravo Doubles draw, dropping the championship match to Emily Dush of Colorado State 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, Andrea Le and Arianna Van Houweling defeated Bishard/Pinaieve of New Mexico State 8-4. Sydney Fitch and Alexis Odom, who won the Alpha doubles draw, remained undefeated with an 8-4 win over Pursell/Driscoll of Denver. Courtney Swift and Kayleigh Yun-Thayer defeated Starreveld/Rodas of Idaho 8-2.
Air Force had four wins in singles play. Van Houweling defeated Anna Simonov of Denver 6-3, 7-5. Fitch defeated Ana Morett of Weber State 6-4, 5-7 (10-7). Swift capped a 3-1 weekend, by defeating Dora Kurdi of New Mexico State 6-2, 6-4. Odom defeated Len Beckx of Idaho 6-1, 6-1.
Head coach Kim Gidley on day four:
"With nearly 300 matches played over the weekend and 10 schools from the ITA Mountain Region, we got in a lot of tennis. Most players all played eight matches for the team to get off to a great start this fall season. The coaching staff could not be happier with how this group performed in their first outing of the season. Our doubles looked great, and the team went 4-0 with their doubles record on two separate days. The team came out with a ton of energy today and played their best on the last day. To win the top draw doubles draw for the third time in four years with three different teams, means we are doing something right. It was also great to have our freshman, Abby Cotuna, come away with a doubles title with a senior, Shailla Alda in the Charlie flight. In singles, both our seniors had tremendous performances. Sydney Fitch lost to the Champion of the tournament and then went on to beat a player she had lost to last year, while Courtney Swift went 3-1, with her only loss to the player that won her draw. This is a great starting point, and we know where we are at and what we need to work on to keep improving."
