Falcons Fall in Three to Boise State

Ashley Bible tallied eight kills on .375 hitting, as well as a team-high three blocks, in two sets.
BOISE, Idaho – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Boise State this afternoon (Sept. 24) in Idaho, as they fell in straight 13-25, 23-25, 16-25 sets to the host Broncos.
Junior Amber Soto and senior BrookeLyn Messenger each led the team in multiple statistical categories, as Soto tallied team-high marks in assists (15) and service aces (two), while Messenger accounted for team-leading marks in kills (nine) and digs (six). Freshman Ashley Bible, playing in the final two sets, led the team with three assisted stops, while adding eight kills on .375 hitting (8-2-16).
Junior Caroline Reinkensmeyer opened the match with a service ace, but the Broncos quickly embarked on a run that sent Air Force into an early timeout, trailing 11-5. Messenger and junior Joi Harvey tallied kills, but Boise State extended their advantage to 16-7. Sophomore Mac Russ scored the next three Air Force points, before Soto registered a pair of back-to-back aces. Messenger added one more kill, but the Broncos took the opening set 25-13.
Boise State struck first in the second, but Bible immediately made her presence known with a hand in the Falcons' first three points. Tallying a kill and teaming up with Harvey for two blocks, Bible helped Air Force pull within one at the 3-4 mark. Back-to-back strikes from Russ and Messenger gave Air Force a 6-5 lead, while a score from junior Savannah Neal kept the Falcons ahead 7-6. Bible (11-11) and Russ (12-12) accounted for set-tying kills, while scores from Russ and freshman Savanah Johnson highlighted a 5-0 run that ended with Air Force holding a 17-14 lead. The Falcons pushed its advantage to five (22-17) following points from Messenger (kill), Johnson (kill), Bible (two kills) and sophomore Murphy Riggs (ace), but the Broncos closed on an 8-1 run to complete the 25-23 comeback victory.
Bible registered the Falcons' first point of the third set, while a Russ/Neal block kept Air Force within one (4-5). The Falcons earned kills from Russ, Messenger, Johnson, Bible and freshman Alex Hatchett, but Boise State pushed its advantage to five (15-10). Messenger added three more kills, while Bible and Hatchett teamed up for a block, but Boise State scored seven of the final nine points for the 25-16 win.
The Falcons return to the Academy this weekend for another pair of conference matches. Air Force will host Colorado State at 6:00 p.m. (MT), on Thursday, Sept. 29, before welcoming Wyoming – and Air Force Volleyball alumni – to Cadet East Gym at 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 1.
