Jacob Mendoza's decision in the final bout secured the team title for the Falcons.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team kicked off Navy weekend at the Academy with a 5-3 victory over the Midshipmen in a special edition of Friday Night Fights this evening (Sept. 30) in a packed Cadet Gym Boxing Room. The Falcons secured the title over their service academy rivals in the final bout, with junior Jacob Mendoza claiming the deciding victory.
Air Force opened the night claiming victories in four of the first five contests, with freshman Jake Edwards' debut victory over Rudy Obina at 156 pounds guaranteeing Air Force at least a tie of the eight-bout card.
Sophomore Luke Kohout put the Falcons on the board first, as he earned the 150-pound decision over Cam Delay, while senior Garrett Kim and junior Mack Lucas earned unanimous decisions from the judges to push Air Force's advantage to 3-1. Kim defeated Chris Eguchi in the 142-pound contest, while Lucas swept the judges' votes in her 150-pound contest with Izzy Gorczynski. Edwards, the only first-year boxer to make the Falcons' lineup, forced Obina into a pair of standing eight counts in the second set, before causing another in the third that had the referee stopping the contest before the final bell and giving Air Force a 4-1 lead.
Navy, which had evened the match early (1-1) with Justin Kirkpatrick's 185-pound decision over junior Joe Wilson, pulled within one (4-3) following a pair of back-to-back victories – Aidan McNally over senior Tyler Dalzell at 155 pounds, Jordan Barnhart over senior Allyah Marlett at 170 pounds. In the final bout of the night, Mendoza had the crowd on its feet during a 178-pound decision over EJ Hagins that halted the Midshipmen's comeback and secured a 5-3 victory for the Falcons.
Air Force returns to action on Oct. 14 for their first Friday Night Fights of the season.
