ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Backed by four-straight victories to open the night, the Air Force boxing team split its annual showdown with service academy rival Navy this evening (Oct. 20) at Dahlgren Hall in Annapolis.
The Falcons jumped on the Midshipmen quickly, winning their first four bouts. Newcomer Naomi Brabham won the opening fight with a unanimous 112-pound victory over Lily Turner, while she and sophomore Chinonye Mbanugo, who earned a 3-0 decision over Cami Johnson at 147 pounds, bookended the Falcons' four-win start. Senior Angelo Ganac and sophomore Jake Edwards also claimed victories during the run, as Ganac won his 195-pound bout with Justin Kirkpatrick and Edwards defeated Luca Fimiani at 156 pounds for his second-straight win in the annual Air Force-Navy showdown. Sophomore Duong Tran secured a tie for Air Force two bouts later, as he defeated Gabe Armendariz at 139 pounds (3-0) to give Air Force its fifth win of the night.
Five other Falcons also represented the Academy tonight at Navy, including sophomore Neo Takazawa (156 pounds, Nick Smith), classmate Alejandra Tirado-Elias (139 pounds, Emily Spencer), and the senior trio of Andrew Ison (165 pounds, Joey Motzel), Nile Owens (147 pounds, Cam Delay) and Jacob Mendoza (185 pounds, Ethan Stern).
Air Force will meet up with its counterparts from Navy again next Friday (Oct. 27), when the two academies join Army West Point at the annual Chuck Daley Invitational in Detroit.
