
Air Force closes out fall schedule at Ka’anapali Classic

THIS WEEK: Air Force will compete in the ninth annual Ka'anapali Classic, Oct. 26-28, at the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Maui. The par-71 course will play at 6,700 yards. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
THE FORMAT: Teams will play 18 holes each day starting on Thursday, Oct. 26, with a shotgun start at 8:30 am HST (12:30 MST). Five golfers will play with the low four individual scores determining the team scores for each round.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the field includes Boise State, Clemson, Colorado, CSU Northridge, Denver, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Gonzaga, Hawai'I, Kansas, Liberty, Louisiana Lafayette, Mount St. Mary's, North Florida, Oklahoma, Sacramento State, San Jose State, UConn and Wyoming. Four teams visiting Maui qualified for the 2023 NCAA Championships: Colorado, East Tennessee State, Georgia and Oklahoma. Eleven players in this year's field are ranked in the top-100 of the PGA TOUR University Rankings. Oklahoma senior Ben Lorenz is the tournament's highest-ranked individual at No. 14. In the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, East Tennessee State is 17th, Oklahoma is ranked 19th and Georgia is receiving votes.

AIR FORCE AT THE KA'ANAPALI CLASSIC: Last season, the Air Force golf team shot its best round of the season at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, Oct. 28-30, at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club in Lahaina, Hawai'i. Air Force's team score of 289 in the final round, and the three-round score of 893, were both season bests. Cameron Kahle led the Falcons with a 221, followed by Alvaro Fonseca (224), Isaac Layne (224), Brooks Morrell (227) and Christoper Park (229). Oklahoma, ranked 11th in the nation, won the tournament with an 811 (-41). Clemson was second at 823 (-29) and Liberty was third at 826 (-26). Air Force placed 20th. In 2018, the Falcons shot an 880, including a 285 in the second round, for the best scores the team has shot in Ka'anapali. Joseph Crisostomo's 65 in the first round and 207 over three rounds in 2019 are the best by a Falcon.
LAST TIME OUT: The Air Force golf team fired its best team score of the season at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational, Oct. 9-10, at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas. Air Force's 886 three-round score is the best of the season. Air Force's first round score of 294 was the team's season best, before a 291 in the second round. Junior Cameron Kahle made four birdies in the final round for a season-best 71. Kahle finished as the top Falcon over 54 holes with a 218 (+2). Freshman Eli Huntington shot his best collegiate tournament with a 220 (+4). Sophomore Alvaro Fonseca shot a 223, followed by freshman Alex Lynch (225) and freshman Carson Baker (237). Sophomore Eric Liveringhouse, competing as an individual, shot a 227.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Among players who have played more than six rounds, sophomore Alvaro Fonseca leads the team with a season stroke average of 74.83. Freshman Eli Huntington is second (75.42), followed by junior Cameron Kahle (75.58) and freshman Carson Baker (77.00). The 291 in the second round of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational is the best of the season, as is the 54-hole score of 886 at the same event. Freshman Alex Lynch has the best round of the season with a 69 (-3) in the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational Individual Tournament. Lynch also has the best round in a team scoring event with a 70 (-2) in the second round of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational.
