USAF ACADEMY – A tenacious Air Force team battled into the win column for the first time this season, knocking down Grand Canyon, 1-0, in a Western Athletic Conference matchup Thursday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons improved to 1-5-1 in the league while GCU dropped to 2-4-1.
The teams were near even in possession time, both fighting for meaningful possessions through the scoreless first half. Out of the halftime locker room, Air Force had more pep in their step and applied more pressure.
The WAC's preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Thaddaeus Dewing, notched the only goal of the match via a touch from Nick Bisagno in the 73rd minute. He celebrated his second goal this season with a backflip.
With playoff hopes in the back of every Lopes' mind, GCU turned up their effort. Despite the extra effort, Air Force held GCU at bay, containing the home third and giving up just one shot on goal after the first strike.
At the final horn, Air Force held the advantage in shots, 14-13, and shots on goal, 5-3. Carter Rizzo led AF shooters with three attempts while Dewing, Remi Smith and Greg Hill attempted two apiece. In his first win of the season, Jakob Stone notched two saves.
Next up, the Falcons host California Baptist for Senior Day, Sunday (Oct. 29). Action at Cadet Soccer Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
