Air Force Drops Road Match to UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Air Force volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to UNLV this afternoon (Oct. 7) in Las Vegas. The Falcons' 19-25, 13-25, 26-24, 17-25 decision at Cox Pavilion snapped a three-match road win streak that dated back to the MW-opening weekend.

Junior Ella Tschuor and senior Joi Harvey led the Falcons with 12 kills apiece, while Harvey hit at a match-high .526 clip (12-2-19). Senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer assisted on 25 of the team's kills, while she and sophomore Jordan Suan both recorded a match-high 10 digs. Suan added a pair of service aces, while junior Mac Russ rounded out the Falcons' stat leaders with four blocks (all assisted).

UNLV took an early 3-1 lead, but the Falcons scored three straight, including a kill from sophomore Ashley Bible and a block from Russ and senior Aaryn Scires, to take a 4-3 advantage. The teams traded six points to a seven-all tie, before the Rebels used a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Tschuor put down a kill and ace to bring the Falcons within one (10-11), but UNLV pushed its margin to four at the 16-12 mark. Russ put down a kill and teamed up with Bible for a block during a 3-1 run by the Falcons that included an ace from Suan (15-18). Two more scores brought Air Force back within one (17-18), but the Rebels scored seven of the final nine points for the 25-19 win.

Harvey recorded the first point of the second set and Scires added a kill, but the Rebels doubled up the Falcons by a 6-3 score. A pair of kills from Tschuor helped Air Force pull within one (9-10), but – despite kills from Harvey and Russ (two), UNLV used two long scoring runs to take the second set by a 25-13 score.

The third set opened with another Harvey kill, while a strike from Russ gave Air Force an early 3-2 lead. The Falcons maintained their advantage off kills from Scires (5-4, 7-5) and an ace from senior Amber Soto (6-4), while back-to-back kills from Bible and Harvey sent UNLV into a timeout with the Falcons holding a 9-6 lead. UNLV pulled within one at 9-8, but a kill (Scires), ace (Reinkensmeyer) and block (Harvey) on consecutive plays pushed the Falcons' lead to four at 12-8. Tschuor put down a kill and teamed up with Russ for a block to maintain that lead (16-12), but UNLV scored five of the next six to even the set at 17. Following a tie at 19, Bible (20-19) and Harvey (21-20) put down kills that gave Air Force back the lead, while four points from Tschuor (three kills, block with Russ) helped Air Force claim the 26-24 victory.

Backed by three scores from Harvey (two kills, block with sophomore Savanah Johnson), Air Force rolled out to a quick 4-0 lead to start the fourth. The Rebels responded with the next five scores and the teams traded the next four points, before UNLV pushed its lead out to 10-6. Tschuor traded points with the Rebels, before Soto (kill) and Suan (ace) brought the Falcons within one (11-12). The Rebels, who retook the four-point lead at 16-12 and 19-15, closed the set on a 6-1 run to take the set 25-17.

The Falcons return to the Academy next week to close out the first half of the home-and-home portion of the conference season against Colorado State (Thursday, Oct. 12) and Wyoming (Saturday, Oct. 14).
