U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force rifle team defeated Army and Navy to win its 10th straight President's Trophy, Saturday, Nov. 4, in West Point, N.Y. Air Force won its 11th overall President's Trophy, the most among the service academies.
The Falcons won the match with a 5892, while Navy was second (5856) and Army was third (5118). Air Force's team score is a record in the President's Trophy rivalry, besting the 5883 in 2021. The President's Trophy uses five counting scores, rather than the usual four counters in the NCAA format.
Junior Lauren Hurley was the Falcons' top individual, third overall, at 1182. Junior Scott Rockett was fourth (1179), followed by Peninah D'Souza (1177), Victoria Leppert (1176), Dante Aletto (1174) and Morgan Kreb (1172). Both Leppert and Aletto shot career-best scores.
Hurley and Aletto each shot a 587, a career-best score for Aletto. Rockett and Kreb both shot a 584, followed by D'Souza and Leppert at 581. In air rifle, D'Souza was the top overall shooter with a 596. Hurley was third overall at 595, followed by Leppert with a career-best 595.
"It took everyone's effort on the team today to win our 10th in a row," head coach Launi Meili said. "Team captain Dante Aletto had a personal best 587 in smallbore and Lauren Hurley also had a 587 to set the pace. Peninah D'Souza was the top air rifle finisher and Victoria Leppert came in second in a tie breaker with Scott Rocket. We learned some things to be ready for a head-to-head match with Army tomorrow. Hopefully we finish strong with another win and a score to help us get to nationals."
Air Force will battle Army in a dual match on Sunday, Nov. 5, in West Point.
