Falcons Head to Texas for NCAA Mountain Regional
11/8/2023 2:36:00 PM | Cross Country
The Air Force cross country team returns to action this weekend, as it travels to Lubbock, Texas, for the NCAA Mountain Regional on Friday, Nov. 10. The Falcons' lineup, which includes the 24th-ranked men, will face a stacked field of their regional counterparts for a chance to qualify to the NCAA Championships.
MEET INFORMATION
The NCAA Mountain Regional, hosted by Texas Tech, will be contested at Lubbock Christan University's Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course (2611 Frankford Ave) in Lubbock. The women will kick off this year's regional with a 6K race at 10:00 a.m. (CT), while the men will follow with their first 10K of the year one hour later. Live results will be available via PrimeTime Timing and a direct link is available on the team's schedule page at GoAirForceFalcons.com.
COURSE INFORMATION
A former on-campus golf course for Lubbock Christian University, the course at Chaparral Ridge was converted for cross country in 2017. The course features running thoroughfares which are more than 25 feet wide throughout, a permanent finish line, and a starting line that is more than 295 feet wide. Consisting primarily of Bermuda grass, it is listed among the fastest in the nation.
WEATHER WATCH
The projected forecast for Friday in Lubbock is cloudy, with a high of 53 and a low of 38.
THE STARTING LINE
Air Force is sending 16 runners to Lubbock for the NCAA Mountain Regional – Will Allen, Eli Bennett, Luke Combs, Jett Knight, Sean Maison, Jayden Nats, Jason Renze, and Max Sannes for the men, and Rachel Crytser, Ricky Fetterolf, Ava Gilliana, Halle Hamilton, Anna Harden, Ally Peterson, Tiaree Towler, and Rebecca Wusinich for the women.
WHERE TO FIND THEM
Both the men and women will start their respective races out of Box 6.
SCOUTING THE WOMEN IN THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Two of the top-three teams in the women's national standings are from the Mountain Region, including top-ranked Northern Arizona and third-ranked BYU. The field also includes No. 13 Colorado, No. 20 Utah, No. 22 Utah Valley, and No. 27 Colorado State, as well as teams from Air Force, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Texas Tech, Utah State, UTEP, Weber State, and Wyoming.
SCOUTING THE MEN IN THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Like the women's field, two of the nation's top-three teams – also No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 3 BYU – reside in the Mountain Region. The regional lineup also includes No. 19 New Mexico, No. 23 Colorado, No. 24 Air Force, a Montana State team that is receiving votes, and teams from Colorado State, Idaho State, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Texas Tech, Utah State, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State, and Wyoming.
HOW IT WORKS
The regional meet serves as the primary feeder into the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships. The top two teams from each of the nine regional sites – West, Mountain, Midwest, South Central, Great Lakes, South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast – as well as the top four individuals not on an advancing team, will receive an automatic berth into the national meet, while the remaining teams are chosen by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Committee on an at-large basis from across the country.
MEN MOVE UP TO NO. 24 IN THE NCAA
10-30-23 | The men moved up to No. 24 in the Oct. 30 edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national standings. It is the 53rd-straight poll where the Falcons have been mentioned in the national conversation (either ranked or receiving votes) – a program-best streak that dates back to the opening poll of the 2017 season.
SEVEN FALCONS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
10-30-23 | Seven Falcons were named all-Mountain West following their performances at the MW Championships on Oct. 27. Halle Hamilton, Max Sannes, Sean Maison and Jason Renze claimed first-team status after finishing within the top seven of their respective races, while Eli Bennett, Luke Combs and Ally Peterson were named second-team after placing between eighth and 14th.
THE LAST COURSE
The 2023 season wraps up next Saturday (Nov. 18), when the top teams in the nation converge on Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va., for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The official list of qualifiers will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show on NCAA.com this Saturday (Nov. 11), at 5:00 p.m. (ET).
