Air Force Off To 7-0 Start After Doubleheader Sweep Of MSU-Denver

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis swept MSU Denver in a doubleheader Saturday at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. The Falcons won the morning match 5-2 and the afternoon match 7-0. The wins moved the Falcons to 7-0 on the season for its best start since the 2004-05 season.

In the morning match, the Falcons won the doubles point and went 4-2 in singles play.

The doubles point was won as the Falcons went back-to-back wins at No. 3 and No. 1. Kyle Garner and Jack Brown opened with a win at No. 3 over Kossifas/Fisher 6-2. Jonathan Mascagni and Arjun Kersten clinched with a win at No. 1 over Kantola/Kijak 6-4.

In singles, Kersten opened with a win at No. 1 over Jeanloup Auzias in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The Falcons went up 3-0 as Justin Waldman followed with a win at No. 2 over Alejandro Jimenz in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

The Roadrunners then won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to make it a 3-2 match. Freshman AJ Moore then clinched the match for the Falcons with a win at No. 5 over Stephen Kossifas in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Garner capped the match with a win at No. 6 over David Kijak, 6-3, 6-2.

In the after noon match, the Falcons took the doubles point and went 6-0 in singles. The Falcons won all six singles matches in straight sets.

The Falcons swept at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for the point. Kersten and Moore defeated Kijak/Kantola at No. 1, 6-4. Phillip Deaton and Garner won at No. 2 over McDermott/Auzias 6-4 to clinch.

In singles, Deaton opened with a win at No. 3 over Alejandro Jimenez 6-2, 6-2. Jack Brown won at No. 4 over Kossifas 6-1, 6-2. The Falcons clinched at No. 2, where Mascagni defeated Auzias 6-4, 6-3.

Kersten then won at No. 1 over Kantola 7-5, 6-4. Moore won at No. 5 over Kijak 6-2, 6-1 and Garner won at No. 6 over Dayton Fisher 6-3, 6-4.

Air Force returns to action Feb. 17 against North Florida at the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla. The following day on the 18th, the Falcons face Navy as part of College MatchDay back in Orlando.
