
Golfers open spring season in Florida

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team opens the spring season at the Watersound Invitational, Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 19-21, in Panama City, Fla. Tee times will begin at 9 am ET in the first two rounds and 7:30 am ET in the final round. Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com.
THE FORMAT: Golfers will play 18 holes each day at the par 72, 7,246 Sharks Tooth Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
THE FIELD: The field includes nine of the 11 teams ranked in the top 40 of the GolfStat national rankings. Air Force be joined in the tournament by No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 11 Florida State, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Alabama, No. 24 Mississippi State, No. 36 Notre Dame, No. 40 Clemson, N.C. State and Virginia Tech.
THE LINEUP: The Air Force lineup this week is: 1- Isaac Layne; 2- Cameron Kahle; 3- Alvaro Fonseca; 4- Brooks Morrell; 5- Christopher Park; Ind- Ted Davenport.
LAST TIME OUT: The Air Force golf team shot its best round of the season in the final round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club in Lahaina, Hawai'i. Air Force's team score of 289 was the best of the season. The previous best mark of 296 was met twice in the fall. Freshman Brooks Morrell and sophomore Cameron Kahle each shot a 71 (even) in the final round. The 71 matched the career best of each player. Freshman Alvaro Fonseca made three birdies and shot 73 (+2). Senior Isaac Layne also made three birdies and shot 74 while sophomore Christopher Park made four birdies and shot 75. Air Force's team score of 893 was also a season best. Oklahoma, ranked 11th in the nation, won the tournament with an 811 (-41). Clemson was second at 823 (-29) and Liberty was third at 826 (-26). Air Force placed 20th.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Freshman Alvaro Fonseca leads the team with a 75.22 stroke average while playing in all 18 rounds. Sophomore Cameron Kahle is second at 76.00 and also played in every round. Senior team captain Isaac Layne is third at 76,22 while freshman Brooks Morrell is fourth at 77.22. Both have played in all 18 rounds.
