
Falcons continue rewriting record book at WAC Championships

PHARR, Texas- On the third day of competition at the WAC Championships, Air Force again saw numerous swimmers reconfigure the program's history books.
Wen Zhang, for the second-time this meet, bested his previous record time in the 200 Free, in turn becoming a new conference record. Zhang raced to a first-place win in the event after touching out at 1:31.42, the third-best time in Division I this season.
Zhang also swam to a time of 47.42 as the lead in the 100 Back portion of the 400 IM Relay, resulting in the fourth-best time in said split in Falcons history.
The 400 IM Relay team of Zhang, Tommy Nagle, Grant Afman, and Camden Swigart placed fourth in the championship race. The group swam to a time of 3:12.50.
Swigart triumphed to an electrifying first-place finish in the 400 IM as an individual, winning the race after clocking in at 3:48.56. The freshman now sits only behind Adam Grimm, whose 3:46.22 mark in the event recorded season ago remains tops in Air Force history.
2023 becomes the fourth-consecutive year a Falcon has swam to a championship win in the 400 IM.
Nagle eventually placed fourth in the 100 Breaststroke, qualifying for the evening championship swim. Nagle touched out at 54.04, establishing the fifth-best time in the event in program history.
John Plutt and James Winterfield also swam to program-record swims in their respective lines of work. Plutt's finish in the 100 Fly (47.78) awarded him a 10th-place finish and coincidentally the 10-best time in program history. Winterfield (1:37.31) placed seventh in the 200 Free while entering his name in the Air Force record book with the 10th-best time in the event.
Heading into the final day of competition in Pharr, the Falcons sit fifth among the six teams with 350 team points. UNLV (586) has led following all three days of the conference championships. Tomorrow's concluding proceedings are scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm MT.
