CONCORD, Calif. – The Air Force boxing team swept the men's and women's team titles at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Western Regional, which wrapped up this afternoon (March 12) in Concord, California. It's the second consecutive team title for the women – and the 39th for the men, who have dominated the top spot of the team standings over the last 42 years.
The men roared through their four championship bouts, sweeping their title fights for the second-straight day. Junior Leo Camacho and sophomore Luke Kohout claimed regional titles before the final bell with referee-stopped victories, while seniors Tyler Dalzell and Walker Morris won their bouts by decision.
Camacho earned his second regional title with a 125-pound victory over UC Davis' Joel Yi during a third-round stoppage, while Kohout captured his first title following a second-round win over California's Joseph Accurso in the 147-pound final. Dalzell, last year's champion in that division, won the 156-pound title after claiming a decision over UC Davis' Misael Renteria, while Morris claimed his second regional title by decision over San Jose State's Attitoh Tahouii in the 195-pound championship bout.
With a 147-pound championship belt, Mack Lucas led a trio of women during the championship round. The junior captured her first title after forcing the referee to stop her contest with Santa Clara's Emma Rose Alvarez in the second round.
Sophomore Andrew Lu earned a 119-pound title following a medical walkover from his would-be opponent, while another walkover secured a third-place finish in the 132-pound weight division for senior Garrett Kim. Two other Falcons earned victories in at-large bouts on Sunday, as junior Nile Owens claimed a 139-pound victory over Utah's Aspandiyar Kossanov in a referee-stopped contest (second round), and sophomore Canaan Ray earned a decision in his 165-pound bout with San Jose State's Kofi Arkaah.
The Falcons return to action next month, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C., for the final three nights of the National Collegiate Boxing Association season at the national tournament on April 13-15.
